Winter scouting trick
One of the best parts about giving presentations is sharing ideas and learning things from other anglers.  Last night after giving a presentation on cold water fishing in Dubuque one of the members shared an excellent way to scout during the coldest weather. and it involves limited time exposed to bone chilling weather.
  Steam chasing.
Drive along the creek and watch for steam rising from the water.  It can be an indication of a spring or seep feeding in ground water.  Mark these places mentally or on a map and keep them in mind when you are looking for warm water in the early cold season, or looking for cold water in the dog days of summer.

I spent some time over Christmas holiday actually wading my home water (a small stream fed by our spring fed lake) near the cottage in Northern Lower Pennisula of Michigan. I walked through the runs I normally fish to see how deep they were and more closely examined pockets of water I only skirt when fishing them. Mentally makiing notes about them all for opening day in April.
