Pre-season scouting
We can not stress enough the importance of pre-season scouting. Even if you live far away from the Driftless, it is a great excuse to head out for a weekend and get out of town. Do some homework before hand, check satellite images, maps, DNR websites etc and narrow it down to about 4 areas you want to focus on before you head out.
Then strap on your snowshoes, take a notebook and discover some new water. Winter is a perfect time of year as the water is always lower and clear so you can see into the water well, plus with no bankside vegetation (and no weeds as tall as you!) you can scan the valleys easily. Landowners are usually home so you can knock on doors and share a cup of coffee with locals.
Tom, Pete and I walked a ton of streamside yesterday and found some absolute gems. Got rid of the winter blahs, got some exercise, saw a bunch of fish, and our map books got a few new marks in them.
