Tiny flies
I think one of the most overlooked patterns here in the Driftless is the micro bug.  There are many flies that fall into that category, but we are talking size 20 and smaller.  I understand not being able to thread the eye, but other than that you should carry an assortment of teeny tiny flies.
Why?  Well, there are midges here all day every day.  From 30 below to 90 degrees midges are active and around the stream.  Muddy water, they are still there.
And fish eat them like crazy!
Next time you are in the shop, do not just grab the size 16-18.  Dip into the bin of 20 or 22s.  It may be scary at first, but you will learn to love them as you catch fish under conditions that they ignore the standard sized fare.
So next time you are out, do not hesitate to tie on a small dry or micro nymph.
