Fishing Report

Current information about fishing conditions on major Driftless Area streams. For the latest information, give us a call in the shop at (608) 637-8779 during regular business hours or shoot us an email.

General Driftless Area Conditions

Current Status: GOOD
Reported: July 23, 2008 at 08:08 AM

Flowing clear and well following some rain last week, the area streams will benefit from some cooler summer temperatures today and tonight. Fishng is quite good with the mix of cool nights and cloud cover.
Although hatches are limited to caddis and a few blue winged olives in the evenings, we have started to see some small crickets and hoppers, and when there is cloud cover terrestrials are fishing quite well.
Under the surface, scuds are picking up many fish, as are the standard mayfly and caddis nymphs. There is no silver bullet to catch fish on nymphs right now except a good drift.
Do not overlook streamers when the sun is behind some clouds or shaded by trees.

Timber Coulee (and tributaries)

Current Status: GOOD
Reported: July 23, 2008 at 08:08 AM

Although sporadic, Tricos have been spotted.
With good fishable flows and clarity, expect the TC to produce solidly the next few days.
Fishing has been good on both the tributaries, and the main channel on leeches, larger profile nymphs, and scuds.
Surface wise; ants, beetles, crickets, hoppers etc. are doing well near undercuts and shallow runs when the sun is not shining brightly. Also the evening has the brown caddis coming out, both hatching and now egg laying.

West Fork of the Kickapoo (and tributaries)

Current Status: FAIR
Reported: July 23, 2008 at 08:09 AM

Dropping and clearing well, the WFK is looking good above Avalanche.
Look for fish to start taking smaller scuds, mayflies, and midges in the slower pools, while thick bodied nymphs will work best below the riffles.
Fish will feed on some terrestrials on the surface during the daytime as they become a much more important summer food source.
