Driftless Area - September 7th, 2010
  • Recorded:
  • Windy
  • 62 ° F
  • Fishing: Great
Fishing is very solid after temperatures have dropped over the past few days.  Fish are starting to get aggressive sub surface and taking terrestrials on top.
Fish are starting to show spawning colors too!
Windy today as another weather system blows in, but still cloudy.
Fish have been taking scuds in gray and tan as well as leeches and streamers.
A few olives have popped off here and there with a handful of fish rising, but no major hatches yet.

Driftless Area - September 6th, 2010
  • Recorded:
  • Mostly cloudy
  • 73 ° F
  • Fishing: Great
Possibly the warmest day this week with a high of only 73!  Late summer conditions are here for a few days and fishing has definitely responded.
Clouds today with a tiny chance of some rain this afternoon.
Fishing has been great sub surface (scuds and small dark nymphs) and some smaller hatches of olives have been coming off area wide.  Nothing too exciting on the surface right now.
Terrestrial action has been decent with crickets and smaller stuff outfishing hoppers.  Although with a few breezy days coming up hopper fishing will pick up again.

Driftless Area - September 4th, 2010
  • Recorded:
  • Sunny
  • 63 ° F
  • Fishing: Good
A couple of cool days and nights coupled with higher and, in some cases, stained water have this weekend looking great for fishing!
Scuds are still the ticket sub surface while attractor dry flies are doing well up top.  Today being sunny should see more terrestrial action versus the past couple of days.
Leeches and streamers will also be effective, especially in waters that are still stained or cloudy.

Driftless Area - September 3rd, 2010
  • Recorded:
  • Mostly cloudy
  • 59 ° F
  • Fishing: Good
Great weather conditions today (except for the wind) and heading into the weekend.
Recent rains have put a stain on some of our larger waters, while most of the small streams are clear.  Stained water means less spooky fish.
We have also had a couple of cool nights (last night 50, tonight 45, Saturday 47) which will drop water temperature a couple of degrees and stimulate insect activity (including hatches) and fish activity.
Fishing has been best on scuds (see our blog post for one of the reasons) and other thick bodied nymphs.  Terrestrials are beginning to take fish again now that the rains have left the area.
Today and into the weekend look for olives to hatch in low light conditions.  On the Timber Coulee keep an eye out for tricos too.

Driftless Area - September 2nd, 2010
  • Recorded:
  • Cloudy
  • 73 ° F
  • Fishing: Good
Streams have done a great job getting rid of murky water and most are running stained to clear, with the exception of the larger bodies of water.
Forecasted rain today, not a lot of accumulation and we do not expect a blow out of our waters.
Scuds have been exceptional lately as they are flushed downstream during high water events.
As the water clears, crickets, ants and beetles will become effective again.
There is cooler weather in the area with highs in the mid 60s Firday and Saturday (and lows dipping down into the mid 40s!).  This should re-energize some hatches, especially blue winged olives and tricos, as well as the trout.

Driftless Area - September 1st, 2010
  • Recorded:
  • Mostly sunny
  • 76 ° F
  • Fishing: Fair
UPDATE 9:00 AM:  There is clear water.  Some of the smaller creeks are running with only a slight stain.

About 2 inches of rain total last night has the majority of the water up and muddy again this morning.  There are some tiny tributary streams that are fishable, and some of the other smaller streams will fish well with scuds and san juan worms.  As things drop and clear this afternoon leeches and scuds will fish very well.  Expect most of our waters to be fishable by this evening and into tomorrow barring any more rain.
